Physics of MArtensitic Transformations for the FUNctionality enhancement of crystalline materials and nanostructures
Understanding the fundamental physics behind the multiferroic behavior of magnetic shape memory alloys is currently the principal problem limiting reliable theoretical prediction of functional materials. It has been known that the driving force for the shape memory effect is a martensitic transformation. The aim of the project is to understand fundamental properties of the martensitic transformation and its consequences and manifestations in various materials. The project combines both experimental and theoretical approaches on bulk crystals and thin films. Besides fundamental questions, the project will simultaneously search for new materials with a high application potential that combine high temperatures of martensitic and magnetic transformations with a proper martensitic structure.
